HMS Fearless by Ivan Berryman - Editions Available
Twelve chapters of highly readable text tell the story of two of the Royal Navys longest serving warships from their beginnings in the early 1960s to the final weeks of operational service in the twenty first century, when Fearless was finally decommissioned and joined her sister at lay-up berths in Portsmouth Dockyard. The in depth research has allowed the author to cover the careers of Fearless and Intrepid in great detail through each year of their service from the disengagement from Empire, when both vessels assisted with the withdrawal from Aden in the mid 1960s, through the Falklands war when they led the amphibious fleet, to the twenty first century troubles in the Middle East. Foreword by Commodore A.J.S. Taylor CBE RN, who served as Executive Officer in Intrepid and as Commanding Officer of Fearless.

The Veterans of the Old Trooping Service by Charles Dixon.
Published in 1901 by George Newnes Ltd, this is an original book plate from a large format naval book. These may have some text from the book on the rear of the book plate, but this does not detract from the framed image. Only a few of these original book plates are still available today, more than a century after they were first published.

On June 6, 1944, no fewer than 4000 ships landed 133,000 assault troops on the beaches of Normandy. A further 23,000 parachuted in, whilst Allied aircraft flew 14,000 sorties on that historic day. By the end of August 200,000 seamen had transported two million troops across to France. It was the greatest and most successful military invasion in history, which led to the downfall of Hitlers Germany, and the end of the war in Europe. Robert Taylors painting captures the very essence of that herculean battle. The painting is dominated by one of the many large transport ships, lowering her landing craft under bombardment from shore batteries. Barrage balloons flying, this massive fleet sailed into the teeth of the German defences, to land its invasion forces against all odds.

HMS Medway was the first Royal navy submarine Depot ship that was designed for the purpose from the outset. She is shown here with a quintet of T-class submarines on her starboard side, whilst an elderly L-Class begins to move away having completed replenishment. HMS Medway was sunk on 30th June 1940 having been torpedoed by U-372 off Alexandria.
Spitfires of 126 and 185 Squadrons successfully fend off a last desperate attempt by enemy aircraft to sink the crippled American tanker Ohio, still some 80 miles short of the beleaguered island of Malta. Badly damaged and barely afloat the Ohio, assisted by Royal Navy destroyers Penn, (foreground), Bramham (lashed to Ohios port side) and Ledbury, limped into port to a tumultuous welcome, on August 15, 1942. Her vital cargo of fuel kept the islands air defences alive, and ultimately made the island secure.

Eleven Turkish Officers And 250 Men Surrender To Lieutenant Singleton.
At the approach of the British flotilla the Turkish forces fled, but so rapidly did the Shaitan pursue her way through the town of Amara and beyond, that she succeeded in getting into a position from which her guns commanded the line of the Turkish retreat. Then followed the rather ludicrous sight of eleven Turkish officers and 250 men laying down their arms and throwing up their hands to this pigmy improvised warship, rather than run the gauntlet of her small but well served guns. The days work resulted in the occupation of Amara, including the capture of a garrison of a thousand, and the Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the forces that had been driven from Kurnah. Lieutenant Singleton was awarded the D.S.O.

The Famous Landing From The River Clyde At V Beach.
At 6.10 a.m. on April 25th 1915, the River Clyde struck V Beach, and the hopper went ahead and grounded on the port bow, in the charge of Midshipman Drewry. In the midst of very dangerous firing from the opposite shore, Drewry jumped over the bow and waded towards the beach. Meeting a soldier wounded in the water, he tried to carry him ashore with the assistance of another soldier, but the man was shot in the arms of the rescuers. Drewry then ran along the bridge, but seeing Commander Unwin and Able seaman Williams towing the lighters he waded out and assisted them in securing the boats under heavy rifle and maxim fire. He was wounded in the head, but continued his work and twice subsequently attempted to swim from lighter to lighter with a line. He was awarded the V.C.

The non-combatant members of the Carmanias crew also distinguished themselves during the action with the Cap Trafalgar. Though running considerable risk from shells which burst about the upper works of the ship, two stewards went from one gun crew to another with buckets of limejuice and water for the refreshment of the men who were working in the sweltering heat of a tropical sun. Together with others of the crew they were awarded the D.S.M.

British Destroyers, accompanied by the light cruiser Amphion, under the command of Captain C. H. Fox chasing the German mine laying ship Konigin Luise.
Within a few hours of the outbreak of war a division of British destroyers, accompanied by the light cruiser Amphion, under the command of Captain C. H. Fox, slipped out from Harwich to begin searchlight the lower end of the North Sea. On falling in with a trawler they were told by the skipper that a suspicious looking vessel had been seen throwing things overboard. Steaming on at full speed, the four leading destroyers very soon sighted what appeared to be a Great Eastern Railway steamer making towards the Dutch coast. As they rushed forward, the steamer began to put on speed, and she was soon running for all she was worth. A warning shot was fired, summoning her to stop. But as she failed to do so, the 31-pounders of the destroyers opened fire.
