Naval art prints of the pocket battleship Scharnhorst, by leading naval artists, Ivan Berryman, Randall Wuilson and Anthony Saunders.

The design was a compromise between a Battleship and the a heavy armament Pocket battleship. Built at Wilhelmshaven and laid down on the 16th May 1935, launched 3rd October 1936 and completed 7th January 1939.   (refitted just after completion  with a clipper bow so called a Atlantic Bow increasing the length by 33 feet, (to 770 ft 8 inches) this took until September 1939.  Scharnhorst was torpedoed by a Royal Naval Submarine during the Norwegian campaign. repairs took until October 1940.  After repairs she acted with her sister ship attacking allied shipping between January and Mrch1 1941. During the "Channel dash" on the 12th February 1942 the Scharnhorst (along with Gneisenau were mined but managed to reach the safety of the German Port.  her repairs took place at Kiel and were completed in October 1942.  In March 1943 she was transferred to Northern Norway to continue her commerce raiding on Allied shipping, But on the 26th December 1943, while attempting to intercept convoy JW-55B.  she encountered a large British Force of the battleship HMS Duke of York and the cruisers HMS Belfast, HMS Jamaica and HMS Norfolk.  Initially HMS Norfolk engaged the Scharnhorst and a lucky hit knocked out the radar systems of the Scharnhorst.  soon after the Scharnhorst was engaged by the Battleship HMS Duke of York along with the cruisers and was sunk with the loss of 1,803 crew (she had been hit by a number of shells and 14 torpedoes. This engagement took place north east of the North Cape.

Attack on the Scharnhorst by Ivan Berryman.

Swordfish of 825 Sqn led by Lt-Cdr Esmonde begin their heroic attack on the battlescruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen as they make their way up the English Channel from Brest during Operation Cerberus on 12th February 1942. Although all the aircraft were lost and no significant damage was done to the German fleet, all the pilots were decorated for their bravery and Lt-Cdr Esmonde received the first Fleet Air Arm VC to be awarded, albeit posthumously. The painting depicts the first wave of Swordfish attacking the Scharnhorst with Gneisenau taking avoiding action in the distance. A German torpedo boat has turned to confront the attacking aircraft.

Escort to the Scharnhorst by Simon Atack

Escort to the Scharnhorst by Simon Atack

When the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau entered Brest in March, 1941, between them they had sunk a total of 22 ships during their North Atlantic operations. Laying in port however, they became a target for constant air attack, Scharnhorst being damaged by bombs, and in February 1942 the decision was made to break out with the famous Channel Dash. Scharnhorst led the flotilla in a daring passage through the English Channel, heading for the sanctuary of Wilhelmshaven. They all got through but, striking two mines en-route, it was March 1943 before the Scharnhorst was able to resume battle operations when, under heavy escort, she sailed for Norway. Simon Atacks panoramic seascape depicts a scene from Operation Paderborn as Scharnhorst ploughs through a lively swell with Fw190s of I./JG5, based at Oslo Fornebu, providing fighter cover. Steaming in company with destroyers Z-28 and Erich Steinbrinck, the mighty German battleship has departed Gotenhafen and is heading towards Bo.........

HMS Norfolk at the Battle of the North Cape by Ivan Berryman.

HMS Norfolk at the Battle of the North Cape by Ivan Berryman.

HMS Norfolk and HMS Belfast of Force I are shown engaging the Scharnhorst which has already been hit and disabled by both HMS Duke of York and the cruiser HMS Jamaica. Scharnhorst was never to escape the clutches of the British and Norwegian forces for, having been slowed to just a few knots by numerous hits, fell victim to repeated torpedo attacks by the allied cruisers and destroyers that had trapped the German marauder.

Death of the Scharnhorst.

Death of the Scharnhorst.

John Winton.

The Scharnhorst was one of the Germans most valuable and successful battle cruisers. From the earliest days of the Second World War she wreaked havoc on Allied convoys and became a symbol of German naval might. But on Christmas Day 1943 this came to an end when the Home Fleet of the Royal Navy was successful in trapping and sinking her in a climactic battle with the big guns of the battleship Duke of York. Drawing on eyewitness accounts from both British and German survivors, this is John Wintons gripping story of how the Scharnhorst was lured out to sea and finally defeated.

Operation Cerberus - The Channel Dash by Philip West.

The Channel Dash (officially known as Operation Cerberus) was one of three operations during the Second World War for which the Swordfish was to become the most famous. Heavily outgunned in the Straits of Dover on this day in February 1942 by the German warships Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen, with their accompanying flotilla of destroyers and motor torpedo boats, and with top cover provided by deadly fighter aircraft of the Luftwaffe, all six Fleet Air Arm Swordfish were shot down. Only five of the eighteen aircrew survived. Here we see the Swordfish flown by Sub. Lt. Kingsmill and Sub. Lt. Samples with PO Bunce in the rear, fighting for their lives with his machine gun.

Atlantic Comrades by Ivan Berryman.

Atlantic Comrades by Ivan Berryman.

The Scharnhorst is pictured in 1939 when she and her sister ship Gneisenau menacingly prowled the North Atlantic. She is shown at dawn as two type VII U-Boats glide towards her for a friendly rendezvous and to take on much needed supplies, as well as a few of the luxuries that the tiny u-boats were simply too small to carry.

Channel Dash - A Whirlwind Encounter by Robin Smith.

Channel Dash - A Whirlwind Encounter by Robin Smith.

February 12th 1942. A Westland Whirlwind rushes an attack on the Scharnhorst as one of 20 Me109s defending the German ships arrives on the scene. Despite opening fire at every opportunity, all four Whirlwinds of No.137 Squadron were lost against the overwhelming opposition of enemy fighters from JG2 and the defensive guns of the ships. Three official claims for Whirlwinds were made by German pilots of JG2 that day - one by Johannes Stolz, another by Willi Reuschling and a third by high-scoring ace Egon Mayer, claiming his 29th victory in a tally that would rise to over 100 before his death in 1944.

As the sun slowly begins to rise this wintry morning over Thorpe Abbots, Norfolk, ground crew prepare B-17G The All American Girl in an almost surreal setting, for her 99th dangerous mission over enemy territory. On 10th January 1945, 19-year-old pilot, 1st Lt. John Dodrill and his crew went missing on a combat sortie to Cologne. Like many other crews, they made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for freedom, with the Bloody Hundredth Bombardment Group playing its full part with courage and honour.

In the skies just west of Amiens on 20th April 1918, the celebrated German ace, Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron, flying his famous all-red Fokker DR.1 Triplane 425/17 and accompanied by other DR.1s of his notorious Flying Circus, encountered Sopwith Camels of No.3 and No.201 Squadrons and a fierce aerial battle ensued. Two Sopwith Camels were to fall to the Red Baron's guns that day, the first of them being Major Richard Raymond-Barker, shown here flicking his aircraft to the right to avoid the German's fire. Raymond-Barker was almost immediately shot down, his burning aircraft being consumed by fire on impact. Just minutes later, Second Lieutenant David Lewis was caught and despatched, these two British scouts being the last ever victims of Baron von Richthofen.

The Vulcan would take part in the seven planned bombing missions during the Falklands campaign codenamed Operation Black Buck. Each mission would require a solo Vulcan Bomber (plus an airborne reserve Vulcan in case of problems with the first) to fly and bomb the Argentinean airfield at Port Stanley, requiring the support of 12 Handley Page Victor K2 tankers of 55 and 57 squadron on the outward journey and 2 Victors and a Nimrod on the return journey.

Viewed across the damaged stern of the 80-gun San Nicholas, Nelson drives HMS Captain onto the Spanish vessel in order that she can be boarded and taken as a prize, the British marines and men scrambling up the Captains bowsprit to use it as a bridge. The San Nicholas then fouled the Spanish three decker San Joseph (112), allowing Nelson and his men to take both ships as prizes in a single manoeuvre. A British frigate is moving into a supporting position in the middle distance.

Germanys U-boat fleet had almost brought Britain to its knees in the First World war, twenty years later the story was very similar. the German U-boat arm came perilously close to cutting the lifeline that crossed the Atlantic between North America and Britain. in the early years of the war Donitz realised that keeping his U-boats at sea for as long as possible would greatly increase their chances of success. here U-93 (left) and U-94 take fuel from the auxiliary cruiser Kormoran whilst in the mid-Atlantic during 1941

In a time when loyalty to one club is a rare commodity, Manchester United have managed to maintain the services of Salford born Paul Sholes since he graduated from being a trainee in 1991. Since then Paul has featured in over 400 games for the Red Devils and at the same time has had a distinguished England career of 65 caps. Paul's versatility means Sir Alex ferguson has used him in many different positions though he is most effective playing behind the front two, where he can time his runs into the penalty area to devastating effect. Paul Scoles has scored some spectacular goals and has assisted in countless more. Paul will go down in Old Trafford history as one of United's best and most consistent players of the last 25 years.
